Prazosin Hydrochloride recall: 580,000 bottles pulled over cancer concerns

A recall has been issued for more than 580,000 bottles of blood pressure medication over concerns about cancer-causing chemicals. New Jersey-based Teva Pharmaceuticals USA Inc. recalled bottles of Prazosin Hydrochloride capsules after tests by the Food and Drug Administration found a carcinogenic impurity. According to the FDA enforcement report, the recalled capsules tested above acceptable intake levels of N-nitroso Prazosin, a cancer-causing compound. The report says the drug was initially recalled on Oct. 7 and classified as a Class II recall on Oct. 24. A Class II recall indicates consumption of the product may cause health problems, though they may be temporary or reversible. The recall affects 1mg, 2mg, and 5mg Prazosin Hydrochloride Capsules USP. You can find information on the recalled product lot codes here. California’s Board of Pharmacy issued an alert that the overall risk of harm is considered medium, according to a Health Hazard Assessment by Teva USA. “Prazosin is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, to lower blood pressure, and there are many alternative treatments available to patients,” Teva told NBC Chicago in a statement. “Teva prioritizes patient safety and product quality at every stage of a medicine’s lifecycle.” The company said those who take the medication should reach out to their pharmacy to find out how to dispose of the remaining medicine. It also said recall letters have been sent to customers with instructions on returning the recalled product. According to Teva’s statement, there have been no “relevant complaints” regarding the medication.
