Prada Unveils New ₹69,000 Metal Safety Pin That Doubles As A Brooch

In a not-so-shocking turn of events, Prada has released a new brooch in the shape of a safety pin with some crochet details on it, along with a Prada charm. However, what is making a buzz on the internet is the jaw-dropping prize – $775 or a whopping ₹68,758 (approx). Prada is selling a safety pin brooch for a the cost of Rs 69,000 Crochet might seem like a grandma fashion; however, interest in it has been picking up as a hobby in the world of social media. It is especially popular among Gen Z, who are opting for slow hobbies such as knitting, gardening and baking, which many say have helped their mental health. While Prada has launched the product recently, the link to the product doesn’t seem to be working. Is it due to the massive backlash they are facing on social media? However, for those who are enamoured by the product and still want to buy it to make an affluent fashion statement, one can still find the product on the Neiman Marcus website. One can buy it in three colours – a blue and brown combination, baby pink with pistachio green variant and an orange and brown fall type mash-up. Safety pin in fashion history Now, the use of a safety pin in the history of the fashion world is not unheard of. In fact, one can say, to designers, tailors and stylists, they are an underrated but essential item to have in their arsenal. Safety pins have also been turned into dresses or at least have made up major parts of the ensemble, like designer Zandra Rhodes’ safety pin-embellished wedding gown that was part of her collection inspired by London’s punk fashions in 1978, or the iconic Versace safety pin gown worn by model-actor Elizabeth Hurley to the premiere of “Four Weddings And A Funeral” in 1994. Even in recent years, singer Miley Cyrus and actors Kristen Stewart and Anne Hathaway have worn ensembles that paid homage to this ridiculously simple piece of metal. Internet reacts In India, it is easy to purchase an entire pack of safety pins (around 10-15 units) of varying sizes for a measly ₹10. So it wasn’t surprising that the internet erupted with shock and horror when they came across this new line of products from the luxury brand. One user wrote on social media, “Bakwaas”, while another commented, “OMG! I’ll make these for half the price!!”. Yet another one wrote, “My grandma could do it better”.
