TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and leaders of the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN will sign the acceptance of Timor Leste as the 11th member of ASEAN in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Sunday, October 26, 2025.Prabowo arrived at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) to attend the 47th ASEAN Summit. Prabowo, who arrived at 08:20 local time, was warmly welcomed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the park entrance of KLCC.According to an official statement from the Presidential Palace, they greeted each other with a handshake and a tight hug before taking a photo together and then heading to the waiting room to join other attending leaders of the conference.From the waiting room, President Prabowo, along with other state leaders, headed to the plenary hall to attend the opening ceremony of the 47th ASEAN Summit. Prabowo seated himself between Sultan Brunei Darussalam Hassanal Bolkiah and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.In addition to signing the declaration for the acceptance of Timor Leste, President Prabowo is scheduled to speak in the plenary session in the afternoon and the retreat session planned for the evening. Moreover, President Prabowo is scheduled to attend other conference sessions, namely the ASEAN-Japan Summit, the ASEAN-India Summit, and the ASEAN-US Summit.The theme for this 47th ASEAN Summit is "Inclusivity and Sustainability." In his opening remarks, ASEAN 2025 Chairman Anwar Ibrahim said that 2025 is a year of increasing contestation and uncertainty. Anwar stated that this competition not only tests the economy but also the determination to maintain cooperation and belief that dialogue can still be realized in this era."The year 2025 demands more from us. The world feels uncertain, the old order is no longer certain. Meanwhile, the new order has not yet formed. In various regions, we witness the increasing contestation and uncertainty," Anwar said in his opening speech, as quoted from Bernama TV.However, Anwar stated that ASEAN still holds strong amidst this test. He said that ASEAN persists not because of uniformity, but on the basis of mutual respect and common sense that unites its members.Anwar mentioned that Cambodia and Thailand will sign their peace agreement in Kuala Lumpur. Then, the ASEAN Summit today will accept Timor Leste as a member of ASEAN."Congratulations to President Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao," Anwar said.According to Anwar, Timor Leste's presence will complete the ASEAN family and reaffirm the sense of region-wide brotherhood.The ASEAN Summit will also discuss five consensus points for resolving the conflict in Myanmar, which has not yet been achieved. Anwar stated that enduring peace cannot be imposed. Instead, it must be owned and led by Myanmar itself."Only thus will reconciliation endure," he said.
