Rome, N.Y. — A stretch of Route 46 in Rome has been dedicated in memory of Syracuse Police Officer Michael E. Jensen, who was killed in the line of duty last year.
Sen. Joseph Griffo (R-53) and Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D-119) joined Jensen’s family Friday to unveil new highway signs honoring the officer and Rome native. Local and state officials, law enforcement representatives from across the region and community members also attended the ceremony.
Griffo said Jensen “was a hero who demonstrated remarkable courage and bravery while running toward danger, ultimately sacrificing his own life while in service to others.”
The designated portion of Route 46 runs from Prospect Street in the city of Rome to Dixon Drive in the Town of Western. The route was chosen for its personal ties to Jensen. It begins near the home where Jensen was raised, passes the street where his family lives today, and runs by Delta Lake, where he often fished and spent time with loved ones.
Jensen, who was 29, and Onondaga County Sheriff’s Lt. Michael Hoosock were fatally shot April 14, 2024, while responding to a standoff in Salina. Jensen, remembered by his family as a mentor, teammate and role model, graduated from Rome Free Academy and went on to earn both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business from Le Moyne College.
“We are very honored and thankful for this tribute to Michael’s life,” Jensen’s family said in a statement. “This road will not only bear Michael’s name but will also be a lasting tribute to him.”
Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile also thanked lawmakers for ensuring Jensen’s name will live on.
“Years from now, people will be reminded of Officer Jensen’s ultimate sacrifice and know that there are men and women throughout this great nation willing to risk all to serve and protect their communities,” Cecile said.
The ceremony included prayers, remarks from Jensen’s family and an unveiling of the new sign.
