Kaieteur Sports – Nicholas Pooran missed out on a certain ton, while Alex Hales played a great supporting role to gave the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) the W after surging to a 9-wicket win over the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, when last night’s Eliminator at Providence ended.
Falcons bowed out gracefully after they finished decently on 166-8 after 20 overs, thanks mainly to Andries Gous who stroked 61 with 3 sixes and 5 fours and opener Amir Jangoo, who set the tone up front with a 49-ball 55 including 3 sixes and 3 fours.
All-rounder Shakib Al-Hasan punched 4 fours and a six as he finished the innings with 26* off 9.
TKR bowlers did well with seamers Saurabh Netravalkar (3-23) and Andre Russell (2-30) as well as off-break spinner Usman Tariq (2-19) having good returns.
In reply, TKR sped to 168-1, as skipper Pooran led the chase with a breathtaking 90 not out off 53 balls featuring 8 massive sixes and 3 fours.
Englishman Hales cracked 54* (3×4 3×6) as he helped steady the ship with a season-best stand of 143 runs for the second wicket; after losing partner Colin Munro (14).
Hales and Pooran dug into the bowling as they took their personal scores into the 30’s, bringing the deficit way below 100 runs.
Pooran stepped on the gas with his six-hitting while Hales brought up 3rd fifty this season, as the pair took their team home in the 18th over with a huge six compliments of the skipper.
Earlier in the night, after losing Rakeem Cornwall (6), Jangoo and Gous teamed up to consolidate by adding a new franchise record partnership of 108-runs.
The Falcons 50 came up in the 8th over with the pair already settled, as Gous got to his half-century off 38 balls while the more classy Jangoo got to his milestone a few deliveries after some 44 balls.
Tariq landed a huge double blow, removing Jangoo who was out caught before trapping Gous LBW, as TKR pulled the innings back.
After the dangerous pair of Fabian Allen (1) and Imad Wasim (1) both fell cheaply, it was a 9-ball cameo from the veteran Shakib which helped to push the Falcons to a respectable total.
