IT is finals footy at the Colts AFL oval in Port Moresby this Saturday.
The Moni Plus Port Moresby AFL competition enters first round and teams will be vying to advance onto the next stage.
Association president Douglas Lai said it is exciting to see teams staking their claim in the top five placings. He said claiming the minor premiership in the men’s senior division was TSI Lamana Dockers and West Eagles in the men’s reserve division.
Senior men’s top five: TSI Lamana Dockers 60, West Eagles 56, Gerehu Magpies 54, Gereka Bombers 44, University Tigers 40.
Men’s reserves top five: West Eagles 56, Gordons Kokofas 54, Taikone Hawks 54, University Tigers 52, Sky Roos 48.
“We are heading into the finals playoffs.”
“Congratulations to Dockers for picking up the minor premiership and as a club they have groomed well their young players especially under the guidance of young rookie coach Desmond Kaumu.”
“Using his past playing experience to instill quality footy into the young side his got is rewarding and that is the reason why they are successful,” said Lai.
He said it is also exciting to see two newcomers (Hawks and Sky Roos) playing finals footy whilst season campaigners like Gereka Bombers, Koboni, Dockers and Magpies missing out in the men’s reserves division.
“Sky Roos have actually recruited players from other participating clubs and it is good to see them play in the finals.”
“Hawks is a whole new set up, with only one or two players coming out from the AFL PNG junior development program.”
“Regardless, both teams are newcomers and to see them making the final five just goes to show that there are talents out there and we just need to get them onto the field,” said Lai.
