The prominent political commentator died about 3.50am on Saturday. Before he died, Richardson told his wife Amanda he planned to live until their son Darcy finished his HSC exams. He finished his final exam on Thursday. Richardson's death was announced over 2GB radio on Saturday morning after host Ben Fordham rang in to inform listeners of his passing. Richardson had battled ill-health for years after first being diagnosed with cancer in 1999 before having his bowel removed in 2016. Despite his health battles, Richardson continued broadcasting while expressing his opinions on national and global politics. He was elected a Senator for NSW at just 33, having previously served as the Labor party's state General Secretary at 27.
