Police in Nkhata Bay have launched a manhunt for unidentified suspect for possession of an antique firearm without permit.

The incident occurred on September 8, 2025 at Mtowa Village located in Mzenga area within the district.

It has been established that Jeremiah Banda 32, who hails from the said Village Traditional Authority (TA) Kabunduli in Nkhata Bay was coming from a football match at Chinthewere ground.

Upon arrival at Mtowa trading center, he was attacked by the suspect who stabbed him with a knife multiple times in the head.

The suspect later produced antique firearm and fired but he missed the target before he was disarmed by people who had arrived at the scene to rescue Banda. The suspect managed to free from the scene without being identified.

The matter was reported at Mzenga Police Unit where Banda was referred to Mzenga Health Center for medical treatment.

The firearm and knife were handed over to Mzenga Police Unit for investigations

Meanwhile, investigations are currently underway to identify and apprehend the suspect.
