Another person has been arrested on a gun charge near Topgolf in Naperville, bringing the total number of gun-related arrests to 16 for the year, Naperville police confirmed.
Kachmiel Smith, 26, of Loganville, Georgia, was arrested at 11:09 p.m. Sept. 12 near Odyssey Court and Celebration Drive, on charges of aggravated unlawful possession of a loaded weapon with no FCCA or FOID card and unlawful possession of cannabis by passenger, according to DuPage County Court records.
Officers performing a patrol in the Naperville Topgolf parking lot at 3211 Odyssey Court observed cannabis in open view inside an unoccupied vehicle, according to Naperville police Cmdr. Rick Krakow. When Smith and his passengers returned to the vehicle, officers followed him out of the lot and pulled the car over for moving violations, he said.
A probable cause search followed during which officers found a Glock 26 9mm firearm under the driver’s seat, which Smith acknowledged he owned but for which he did not have a valid FOID card, Krakow said.
Smith’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 6, according to court records.
The last Topgolf gun-related arrest occurred on Aug. 21, when Johnny Lee Cameron Wright, 20, of Hazel Crest, was taken into custody on charges of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated unlawful possession of a loaded weapon without an FCCA or FOID card.
Gun-related arrests outside the business have been making headlines for nearly two years. Arrests started up again this year in early February after a nearly four-month break.
