Greater Manchester Police has issued a statement after Stockport station was evacuated following concerns about a 'suspicious' item on a bridge tonight (Tuesday, November 4). Emergency services, including bomb disposal teams, were called to Greek Street earlier tonight after a suitcase was found. All trains were stopped through Stockport , with Northern Rail urging people not to travel, a 200 metre cordon put in place and surrounding homes evacuated. Now police have confirmed the suitcase was empty. Cordons have been lifted and trains are again running through the station, with delays expected to continue into the evening. A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "Along with the EOD and other emergency services, we have been dealing with an incident on Greek Street in Stockport this evening after reports of a 'suspicious' item on a bridge. "Fortunately, the 'device' has been examined and found to be an empty suitcase, and the cordons are being lifted. Thanks for everyone's patience."
