Police investigating man's death after woman's alleged hospital 'sabotage'

A police investigation is under way into the death of a man at a Sydney hospital around the same time of a woman's alleged "deliberate sabotage" of lines to medical gases at the health facility. Police have referred the death of a 72-year-old man at one of the hospitals in Sutherland yesterday to the coroner after he died in the early hours of Tuesday morning. A woman, 42, has been charged with a series of offences after police allege she vandalised two hospitals on Kareena Road, Caringbah. Police are investigating whether there was a link between the alleged vandalism and the man's death. Premier Chris Minns said the matter would be "completely investigated". "We want to make sure the family have as much information as we have and that we communicate it to them as soon as possible," he said. Mr Minns said the incident had prompted a security review of all critical infrastructure at hospitals. On Tuesday, police said the woman allegedly broke into the grounds of Sutherland Hospital and cut the water and gas mains about 12:20am. They allege about 1:30am she then went across the road to a private hospital and shut off the gas supply. The 72-year-old man, who was a patient at one of the hospitals, died a short time later. "About 2:30pm the same day, police were informed that a man had died at the hospital on Kareena Road," NSW Police said in a statement. "Doctors subsequently issued a death certificate. A report is being prepared for the information of the coroner." The woman was charged with public nuisance, enter prescribed premises of any person without lawful excuse, sabotage, destroy or damage property, and breach of bail. Health Minister Ryan Park on Tuesday described the incident as "deliberate sabotage". "To do this is beyond serious. It could have been catastrophic," he said. "To do this in any way, shape or form is to put the lives of some very seriously ill people at risk in a hospital. It's not a joke."
