Police have arrested a woman after a newborn found in a bus shelter in Longueuil, Que., died on Monday. Police said they found the baby in a bus shelter located on Chambly Road, near Briggs Street. At a news conference, Longueuil police spokesperson Jacqueline Pierre said officers arrested a 33-year-old woman late Monday morning. Investigators are meeting with the woman and evaluating her mental and physical health. Pierre said police would not confirm if the woman is the baby's mother, but she did say officers could potentially lay a charge of infanticide against her. The baby was found still attached to the placenta, naked, and very cold, according to the Coopérative des techniciens ambulanciers de la Montérégie, the paramedic service for Quebec's Montérégie region. The baby was unconscious when found and resuscitation maneuvers were carried out until the baby arrived at the hospital. In a Facebook post, the Service de police de l'agglomération de Longueuil (SPAL) said a call was made to 911 at around 6:30 a.m. Monday to report what appeared to be a baby in a bus shelter. The SPAL added that first aid was immediately administered to the baby, who was taken to hospital. In its publication, police also said an operation was underway and asked the public to avoid the area. A command post was set up at the scene. As of 8 a.m., Briggs Street eastbound and Chambly Road northbound were closed to all traffic. A similar case 'with different consequences,' mayor says In a statement to Radio-Canada, Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier said the abandonment of a newborn baby and the news of the death "is deeply disturbing." She said police are actively working to shed light on the event, "which sadly resembles a similar case that occurred recently, but with different consequences." Earlier this month, another newborn was found on the doorstep of a home on Bourgeoys Street in Longueuil. The boy had been found swaddled in a blanket with his umbilical cord still attached. In the hopes of finding a person of interest in the case, police later released footage showing a person holding what appeared to be a baby in their arms, as they walked down a sidewalk. Police are still investigating the case and they say both events are not related. Fournier said the city will closely monitor the progress of the investigation launched Monday while the person being questioned "receives the physical and psychological support they need in this extremely vulnerable situation."
