French police have arrested two men in connection with the spectacular €88 million robbery at the Louvre Museum, where a gang made off with eight crown jewels in what’s being called one of the most daring thefts in recent years. The two men are being held in custody on charges of organised theft and criminal conspiracy. According to French media reports, one of the suspects was arrested Saturday, October 25, around 10 p.m. at Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport as he was about to board a flight, reportedly bound for Algeria. The other man was detained shortly afterwards in Seine-Saint-Denis, north of Paris, according to Le Parisien. Both men, according to police sources, have previous criminal records. The seven-minute Louvre robbery The robbery, which happened in the early hours of October 19, lasted just under seven minutes – enough time for the thieves to grab priceless artefacts before escaping. The gang is believed to have moved quickly through the museum, targeting specific pieces and avoiding unnecessary damage. During their escape, the suspects left behind some of their equipment and at least one stolen item, which has already been recovered. The speed and precision of the operation have raised questions about whether the thieves had inside help, given how easily they navigated one of the most secure museums in the world. The theft sparked a public outcry in France, with many questioning how such a robbery could happen at a landmark as heavily guarded as the Louvre. Officials have confirmed that security measures are being reviewed as the investigation continues. The search for the rest of the gang Police believe more suspects are still at large and that the two men arrested played key roles in the operation. Forensic experts are analysing the abandoned tools and getaway vehicle, while investigators follow digital and surveillance leads to track the rest of the group. Authorities are hopeful that the arrests will lead to the recovery of the remaining stolen jewels – pieces that form part of France’s royal heritage and are considered irreplaceable. As the story unfolds, France is gripped by what many are already calling “the robbery of the century” – a crime that has left even seasoned investigators stunned by its speed, precision and audacity.
