Police officers and firefighters will now be able to stand as candidates for parliament after the Cabinet approved a bill on the matter. The Justice and Public Order Ministry prepared the bill, which amends the Police and Fire Service regulations that until now have barred members of both security forces from running for public office. The Supreme Court had ruled that the regulation preventing police and firefighters from standing in parliamentary elections, unlike other civil servants, was unconstitutional as it violated the principle of separation of powers. Following the ruling, the Justice Ministry prepared the bill allowing security services personnel to seek parliamentary office. The Cabinet approved the bill today, and it is expected to go before parliament for debate and a vote.
