A former Democratic congressman and ambassador to Japan, Emanuel—who won’t rule out a run for president in 2028— joins host Stephanie Flanders to share his “pro-America” economic agenda, arguing that the real reason US politics has turned fraught is that “the American dream has become unaffordable.” Emanuel’s answer to the economic ills of everyday Americans is to make the basics affordable again and to “fight for America” rather than against a single man, in this case President Donald Trump. He proposes pushing reading and math back to the center of public education, bringing more college credits into high school and opening a free community college lane for B-average kids. From there, he wants Washington to treat universities as the country’s “golden goose,” with a goal of funneling 4% of gross domestic product into public research and development of artificial intelligence, semiconductors, biotechnology and robotics. He also proposes instituting a 24-month permitting “shot clock” such that infrastructure actually gets built.
