Plastics manufacturer expands its Upstate footprint with a $9.2M investment

A plastics manufacturer is expanding its operations in Pickens County with a $9.2 million investment that will create 20 jobs, state commerce officials said this month.

Founded in California in 1952, Peabody Engineering LLC is a manufacturer and distributor of tanks, telecommunication disguising equipment and other plastic products. The company began operations at its Pickens County facility in 2022 with an initial investment of $5.6 million tied to roughly 35 jobs.

Peabody Engineering is consolidating operations by adding 48,000 square feet and new manufacturing equipment to its facility located at 230 Financial Blvd. in Liberty.

This expansion indicates a “strong confidence in South Carolina’s business climate and workforce,” Gov. Henry McMaster said.

As a result of working in Pickens County, Peabody Engineering CEO Mark Peabody said the business has “enjoyed tremendous growth” and looks forward to continuing to grow. They are “blessed” to call South Carolina their home.

Pickens County Council Chairman Alex Saitta is pleased with this progress, as “this is what economic development should be about: good jobs for our residents, real investment in our community, and smart growth.”

Wellford, located in western Spartanburg County, celebrated the grand opening of a 725,000 square-foot perishable distribution center. The facility is designed to receive and process fresh produce, eggs, dairy, meat and frozen goods for delivery to 180 Walmart stores.
