Former principal of Donard School, Edel Lavery, is one of the founders of the project, known as The BASE. Along with Carole Johnston-Thompson and Louise McConville-Clancy, Edel is hopeful that Banbridge and its surrounding areas will get behind their work to create this new charity. The partnership came together with a common goal - to increase opportunity and choice for young adults with learning disabilities. They aim to bring a new and dynamic programme for young adults with learning disabilities to Banbridge. This charitable initiative aims to build on daytime opportunities available to young adults on leaving school. “The BASE will offer a full-time development programme which promotes meaningful social and learning opportunities and links within the Banbridge community,” Edel explained. “There is a clear gap in services for young people with learning disabilities in this area, who are not on a further education or training pathway. “Young people with a learning disability, and especially those with ASD, often face challenges accessing suitable post school pathways which offer a consistent provision. “The BASE aims to provide this consistency through a Monday to Friday provision for adults aged 19-30 years. The BASE mission will be to empower and inspire young adults to reach their potential in a supportive and engaging environment, fostering independence, dignity and inclusion.” In recent months, the partnership has been busy researching best practice and visiting other provisions across Northern Ireland. Their focus over the coming year is fundraising to cover start-up costs involved. The BASE team’s first event will be a book sale and coffee morning (10am-12 noon) on Friday, November 14 in Holy Trinity Church Hall, when they aim to raise funds for both Donard School and The BASE. Donard School Leavers Department will be showcasing their Young Enterprise work.
