Senator Darron Pickstock, who is expected to nominate for the Golden Isles seat on Friday, yesterday resigned from the Senate. In a letter to Senate President J. Lachell Adderley, Pickstock said, “After much reflection and prayer, I have decided to resign my seat in the Senate, effective immediately. “This decision comes from a place of gratitude and conviction. I believe my next chapter is to serve closer to the people, to be on the ground working with families, small businesses and young people who want to see change that they can touch and feel.” He said serving as a senator was “one of the greatest honors of my life”. “It has given me the opportunity to lend my voice to the cause of progress and to witness the dedication of so many who serve this nation,” he said. Pickstock, a lawyer, is a partner at Glinton, Sweeting and O’Brien. He was appointed to the Senate in 2021. On October 16, he was ratified as the Progressive Liberal Party’s candidate for Golden Isles. That same night, during a rally at PLP headquarters, Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis confirmed that the country will go to a by-election to fill the vacant Golden Isles seat after Vaughn Miller died while serving in office. Miller died in September. The by-election is set for November 24. Nomination day is Friday. The Free National Movement (FNM) has ratified Brian Brown for Golden Isles. Brown has been campaigning in the area in recent weeks, however, it is unclear if the FNM intends to contest the by-election. Party insiders say senior members of the FNM are divided on the issue. Meanwhile, the PLP has kicked off its campaign for Golden Isles. During a rally on Monday, Davis made the case for Pickstock. “The world has plenty of performers ... plenty of people who love to hear their own voice, but the people who get things done, that is rare,” Davis said. “You don’t find them often. That is the kind of person that Golden Isles deserves, someone who gets things done.” Pickstock told the crowd that he was the only man who could get the job done in Golden Isles. “I am the only person that can do that job and get things done,” he said. “When the people of Golden Isles call, they want to know that there is someone or the other who will end and who will act on their behalf.”
