As he spoke at the Progressive Liberal Party’s (PLP’s) Southwest Linkup last night, Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis urged supporters to show up in the upcoming Golden Isles by-election, as he praised the party’s candidate, Senator Darron Pickstock, for his work ethic and determination. For his part, Pickstock told a crowd of PLP supporters who assembled at the Golden Gates Assembly Park, that he is the only man who can do the job. Davis said, “The world has plenty of performers ... plenty of people who love to hear their own voice, but the people who get things done, that is rare. “You don’t find them often. That is the kind of person that Golden Isles deserves, someone who gets things done.” He told the crowd that Pickstock should not be underestimated. “Darron has been working hard from when he was only so high,” Davis said. “No matter what he was doing, he was giving his 100 percent. He wasn’t going to let anyone pack or wipe tables or clean better than he did. “You know what that kind of work ethic gets you? A chance at success. “... And he’s had that success as a lawyer, as a businessman, and now as a public servant. “He’s our chairman of [the Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation] BAIC, and he knows how to help small farmers, entrepreneurs and young people find opportunities. “He will be the representative of Golden Isles, the one who shows up, answers the phone, fixes the road, the light.” Pickstock made similar pledges when he spoke to the crowd earlier in the night, claiming he is the only person for the job. “Over the last few days, the people of Golden Isles have opened their doors and let me in,” Pickstock said. “I have listened to what they’ve had to say, and in short, the people want someone who can get things done. “Tonight, I want to be clear, very clear with you – I am the only person in this race who, if given a chance, can do the job. “I am the only person that can do that job and get things done. When the people of Golden Isles call, they want to know that there is someone or the other who will end and who will act on their behalf.” The by-election – necessitated by the unexpected death of Vaughn Miller, who was the area’s MP – is scheduled for November 24. It will be the second by-election during Davis’ term as prime minister, and it comes as both major parties have kicked off campaigns for the general election due next year. Davis warned party supporters last night against complacency. “Winning is never guaranteed,” he said. “PLPs, winning is not guaranteed. Nobody owes us a victory. It’s on us to explain what’s next, to explain how we plan to build our country’s progress, to build on that progress we have made.” “Go and call your friends and family in Golden Isles. Let them know how important this election is to make sure that Darren comes, and we surely will win. “Together, we are stronger, and together we will win.” Nomination day is set for Friday. While the Free National Movement’s candidate for Golden Isles, Brian Brown, has been campaigning in the area, it is unclear if the party intends to contest the by-election. FNM Leader Michael Pintard has repeatedly deflected when asked if the party will contest it.
