Phony electric company worker threatens to shut off power at business: Mayfield Police Blotter

MAYFIELD, Ohio
Suspicious activity: SOM Center Road
A manager of the Village Butcher said Oct. 2 that a man came into the business claiming to be with the Illuminating Company and suggesting that the business had a past due balance.
The suspect claimed that the power would be shut off if no payment were made. He left after providing a letter and statement that the owner felt was suspicious since there was no known past balance.
Officers confirmed the owner’s belief that it was a scam, finding multiple inconsistencies in the letter, which noted that a $1,100 balance was due.
Detectives are trying to identify the suspect.
Disturbance: Glenview Road
A woman reported Oct. 6 that she arrived at a home in the 6700-block to retrieve some property but was locked out by her mother-in-law.
Officers stood by while the woman was allowed into the home to retrieve her belongings. There was no further incident, but a few hours later, the women’s sister-in-law reported receiving threatening messages from her brother. The brother was upset because his wife was given a hard time earlier when retrieving property.
Reports indicate that the man and his wife had been staying at the home with the man’s mother and sister. He was subsequently told that he and his wife are no longer welcome at the home.
Psychiatric situation: Hickory Hill Drive
A resident agreed to be taken to a hospital Oct. 3 after mobile crisis reported that he was having suicidal thoughts.
Suspicious activity: SOM Center Road
A resident said Oct. 5 that her husband heard loud banging at their home the previous night but could not identify the source and had since found shoeprints on a door.
Officers could not confirm if the marks on the door were shoeprints. They provided advice to the resident about security cameras.
