Wrexham’s summer spending has come under fresh scrutiny after former Premier League star Darren Bent admitted he is “shocked” by the club’s poor start to their Championship campaign. Despite splashing out around £33million on new players , including the likes of Nathan Broadhead, Kieffer Moore and Conor Coady, Phil Parkinson’s side sit 21st in the table, just one point above the relegation zone, after five matches. Wrexham have only four points on the board after registering one win, one draw and three defeats in their opening fixtures. The Red Dragons’ most recent loss saw them beaten 3-1 at home by Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, with Hollywood co-owner Ryan Reynolds watching from the stands . Ex- Aston Villa striker Bent has now warned Wrexham’s lowly position could soon cost the manager his job if results do not improve after describing the club’s spending as “nuts”. Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “When you see who they’ve brought in, I didn’t expect them to be one point above relegation. They’ve brought in Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich, Ben Sheaf, a good player from Coventry and Callum Doyle, also a good player. “They’ve brought in people on a free like Josh Windass, who we know can score goals as well. Also Kieffer Moore and Conor Coady. They’ve spent about £30m. Honestly, it’s nuts. “They’ve signed all those players and expectations are going to go right through the roof. I am shocked…but the Championship is a different beast.” When asked if he thought Parkinson would be kept on if their form doesn’t get better, Bent said: ” If they continue like this, no.” Despite the rocky start to life in the Championship, the former Bolton and Sunderland boss still has plenty of credit in the bank after delivering unprecedented levels of success at Wrexham over the last four years. The North Wales outfit have achieved three consecutive promotions under his stewardship. Parkinson oversaw a massive overhaul of his squad during the summer after climbing out of League One , bringing in 13 new players in total. This season marks the first time Wrexham have played in the second tier for 43 years and ex- Wales international Ian Walsh insists the manager deserves more time to get his team to gel. “If they’re sensible they’ll give Phil Parkinson enough time to turn things around,” he told BBC Radio Wales Sport. “It’s difficult, back-to-back-to-back promotions and you drag a lot of new players into the club…it’s going to take time for them to work each other out.” When asked if he could handle the pressure after Saturday’s defeat, Parkinson said: “Absolutely, there’s always been expectations at this club, and I can live with that, no problem. “I always felt with a big change around, there was going to be times at the start where it’s not completely smooth sailing, because obviously when you change the squad round so much, it can be difficult. But a lot of the football today was really good.” Wrexham face another tough test as they travel to take on Norwich on Saturday. The Canaries are currently 10th in the table after they drew 1-1 with Frank Lampard’s Coventry last weekend.
