The Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) has directed all pharmacies across the State to maintain proper prescription records while dispensing medicines, such as anabolic-androgenic steroids and cardiac stimulants, to prevent their misuse for body-building purposes. The directive follows a recent enforcement drive by DCA where gyms and fitness centres in Hyderabad were found to be illegally procuring and selling these prescription medicines, including Mephentermine injections, to gym-goers. The DCA noted that such drugs, when misused for non-therapeutic purposes, can lead to serious health consequences such as cardiovascular disorders, hormonal imbalances, psychiatric disturbances, and even death. Reiterating the regulatory framework, the DCA reminded all licensees that anabolic-androgenic steroids and cardiac stimulants are prescription medicines that must be sold only against a valid prescription issued by a registered medical practitioner. Any illegal sale, diversion, or distribution of these drugs for abusive purposes is a violation of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and will invite stringent action, including cancellation of licences and prosecution under the law.
