Pharmacies report surge in demand for Covid tests and masks

Pharmacies in Slovakia have reported a sharp increase in demand for rapid Covid-19 tests, face masks and hand sanitisers in recent weeks, as infections begin to rise again, the Slovak news agency TASR has reported.

The Association of Chain Pharmacies (APSL) said sales of antigen tests rose by 180 percent between July and August, with an even steeper climb in September. “In the first two weeks of September, sales rose more significantly still – we are currently seeing a fourfold increase,” said the association’s spokesperson, Peter Sedláček.

Preventive items such as masks and antibacterial gels are also in high demand, with sales surpassing levels seen at the height of the winter wave earlier this year.

Pharmacies have sought to reassure the public that supplies remain stable. “They have built sufficient reserves of tests and medicines. We are monitoring the situation closely so we can respond to patient needs,” Sedláček said.

Slovakia, like many European countries, is bracing for a seasonal rise in respiratory infections, with health officials warning that Covid continues to pose risks alongside flu and other viruses.
