Peru’s central bank chief Julio Velarde will soon mark 20 years commanding Latin America’s most stable currency — and is now beginning to signal who he would like to succeed him.
Velarde’s potential departure would mark a massive shift for Peru, where Velarde is hailed as an economic hero who has outlasted eight presidents and some 20 finance ministers. In that time, he has managed to keep inflation under control — forecasting it to end the year at 1.7%.
