Period brand issues advice after EastEnders Lexi storyline sparks conversation

For young girls, starting their period and navigating the significant milestone around school, social activities and hobbies is often a stressful, scary and challenging time. This familiar scene was played out in a recent episode of EastEnders , where 13-year-old Lexi Pearce experienced her first period whilst at a bar with her family – sooner than expected – without any period products to hand. Despite asking for her grandma, Billy Mitchell and Callum Highway jumped to her aid and raced to get pads, paracetamol and a hot water bottle on the instruction of Jonny Carter, after not knowing how to help her. It’s since sparked conversations on X about how to best deal with a first period. Period brand Modibodi, whose period pants have been praised for leaving wearers ‘safe’, ‘secure’ and ‘leak-free’, has a solution to help any young girl from being caught short as well as helping educate them and their family members about periods – its Teen First Period Kit Pack. The kit which is £22.99 for a one pack and £33.99 for a two-pack comes in a limited edition illustrated box designed by UK-based illustrator, Justyna Green, and is packed with all the period-care info, some products and fun extras to help young girls understand their period more. Also included in the kit is a handheld mirror, a waterproof bag to pack a spare pair of period pants in their school bag. For those wanting to learn more about their first period, the brand also offers a “first period hub” designed just for teens to explore and learn about their first period. Sharing a few tips on how to navigate the potential of girls starting their first period, Modibodi explains: “Periods can come at any time, and there’s no crystal ball to tell us when that might be. So arming yourself with some basic period accessories can help minimise the uncertainty. Here’s how. “Pack a period kit. Like a scout, it helps to be prepared. A simple kit in your school bag consisting of your choice of period products, a clean pair of undies and some paracetamol is a good start. Our bikini and boyshort period kits have everything you need to be physically and mentally prepared for your period. Period undies. “Think your period is on its way? A pair of Modibodi period undies will work a treat. Plus they’re comfy enough for everyday wear and absorb sweat, discharge and pee, even if you’re not sure your cycle is about to start. Keep a cycle diary. Tracking your period is easy with all the apps available. “Otherwise go old-school and manually track your cycle with paper and pen. This helps you get in touch with what your ‘regular’ is. Have someone to talk with. Whether it’s your doctor or any adult you can speak with openly, it’s great to have a sounding board when you need to have convos about your period. Uncertainty about which products to use, irregularity, what to expect or a period interfering with your daily life are all worth discussing.” With many people swapping out pads and tampons for more eco-friendly options, there are a number of alternatives on the market should you want to try any other brands. For example, M&S has a three-pack of Heavy Absorbency First Period Boy Shorts, costing £14. Meanwhile, WUKA has school sets that include a number of period pants as well as a bag in which to store them in your school bag safely. Although for those looking to explore the Teen First Period Kit from Modibodi, it has received glowing reviews from parents and teens alike with a 4.4 star rating. One parent shared how they wish they’d been around when they were younger and said: “These have been amazing for my daughter, made her 1st period at age 11 sooo much easier for her and less stressful. She says they are comfy and prefers them to pads. Since purchased more Modibodi pants and the swimwear, wish these had been around when I was younger.” Another shopper raved: “My daughter hasn’t started her periods yet but we looked at all of the options and ordered the period pack. She loves it. The poster, sticker and mirror were a great addition. She now keeps a pair of the pants in the discreet bag in her school bag and knows exactly what to do when her periods start.” “My daughter has started her period before her peers and her Modobodi Hipsters are a brilliant way for her to cope with the transition discreetly without the worry of sanitary towels. Thank you Modibodi for empowering her move into womanhood,” shared another pleased parent. Although the one downside noted by one person was the cost. They said: “Nice but expensive for what it is.” Thankfully, for those wanting to purchase the underwear separately and make their own period kit, the brand’s singular pants are £14.99 for a moderate absorbancy mid-rise brief. However, for the most part the kit has been a welcome addition and aid for parents to begin the conversation around periods. “I love all the confidence boosting things in this. Perfect for starting conversations and explaining everything for my daughter while boosting her confidence,” said another shopper. “We’ve come along way since my mum just silently left a box of pads on my bed without a word.” Explore Modibodi’s range here.
