Among health topics, cancer has arguably become one of the most discussed-and misunderstood-in this age of social media and instant information. Every few days, we come across alarming headlines linking cancer to everyday items, from perfumes to mobile phones to microwaves. But what does science really say? Dr Nayan Gupta, Consultant- Surgical Oncologist, HCG Cancer Centre, Indore helps us sift through the myth and get to the real factors of risk: Perfumes and Deodorants: The Fragrance Fear The general belief is that a person develops breast cancer due to the use of certain perfumes or deodorants containing certain chemicals like parabens or aluminum compounds. Such compounds are thought to interfere with the hormonal mechanisms or block the toxins from escaping through perspiration. No single study has been able to prove the direct connection between perfumes and deodorants with the occurrence of cancers. These are controlled and tested products for their safety. Thus, while the option for natural or chemical-free may be a very good lifestyle option, there is absolutely no scientific reason to be afraid of your daily fragrance. As a matter of fact, the real risks come from long-term exposure to harmful substances like tobacco, alcohol, and environmental pollution. Mobile phones and radiation: Myth Vs Reality Because mobile phones emit radiofrequency radiation, there is a possibility that they may be carcinogenic. RF is a form of non-ionizing radiation. In other words, RF does not have sufficient energy to break chemical bonds or directly alter the DNA molecule in the way that X-rays and gamma rays do. Major health organizations, such as the World Health Organization and the National Cancer Institute, claim that no reliable evidence is at hand that could connect cell phones to cancer. Still, using simple precautions like earphones or speaker mode can be helpful for reducing prolonged direct exposure Lifestyle: The Real Game Changer Scientific evidence reflects that lifestyle factors are the most important cause of cancer risk. Together, factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, poor diet, and lack of physical activity are responsible for nearly 40 percent of all the cancer cases in the world. A sedentary lifestyle, combined with processed food intake, stress, and lack of sleep, weakens the body’s defense system. The risk of cancer can be considerably reduced by a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; frequent exercise; and timely health checkups. Instead of fearing perfumes or phones, we should focus on the choices we make every day. Prevention begins with awareness and healthy living. The real shield against cancer include avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, maintaining an active lifestyle, eating a balanced diet, and getting regular checkups.
