Parx Racing’s biggest day of the year is here. Saturday’s 15-race card features seven stakes races, headlined by a pair of $1 million Grade 1s – the Pennsylvania Derby for three-year-olds and the Cotillion Stakes for three-year-old fillies.
The 1 1/8-mile Pennsylvania Derby is missing the top two three-year-olds in the country, Sovereignty and Journalism, but has the best of the rest. Baeza, Goal Oriented, Gosger and Magnitude have all finished second or third behind Sovereignty or Journalism this year.
Baeza is the morning line favorite at 2-1. Trained by John Sherriffs and ridden by Hector Berrios, Baeza has finished in the money in each of his last four races with no wins to show for it. He was second to Journalism in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, third behind Sovereignty and Journalism in both the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby and Grade 1 Belmont Stakes and was second to Sovereignty in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes. His last win came in a maiden special weight on Valentine’s Day.
Goal Oriented is the second choice at 5-2 with Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard. The Bob Baffert-trained colt finished third last time out in the Grade 1 Haskell Stakes behind Journalism and Gosger. Baffert has trained the winner of the Pennsylvania Derby four times since 2014 while Ortiz Jr. has won the race twice since 2012. Goal Oriented’s last win was an allowance optional claiming race at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby day.
Gosger is 4-1 on the morning line with Luis Saez riding for trainer Brendan Walsh. Gosger has two wins and three seconds in five career starts. He was second to Journalism by less than a length in both the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes and Haskell after winning the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes in April.
Magnitude, trained by Steve Asmussen with Ben Curtis up, is the fourth choice at 6-1. After winning both the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes and Iowa Derby by more than nine lengths, Magnitude finished third behind Sovereignty in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes last month.
Big Truzz (10-1), Mo Plex (12-1), David of Athens (12-1), So Sandy (15-1), Happily Delusional (30-1) and Altobelli (50-1) complete the 10-horse field.
The 1 1/16-mile Cotillion features three of the top three-year-old fillies in the country. Scottish Lassie, Good Cheer and La Cara all have Grade 1 wins on their resumes this year.
Scottish Lassie is the morning line favorite at 9-5. The Jorge Abreu-trained filly was dominant last time out, winning the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks Invitational Stakes by more than 15 lengths. That was her only win of the year and her only time under Joel Rosario, who will be aboard Saturday.
Good Cheer is the second choice at 5-2. Trained by Brad Cox, Good Cheer won the first seven races of her career, capped by the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks on the first Friday in May. She hasn’t won in her two races since, finished fifth in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes and second in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes. Saez will be aboard wearing the royal blue silks of Godolphin.
La Cara, trained by Mark Casse and ridden by Dylan Davis, is the third choice at 7-2. She defeated both Good Cheer and Scottish Lassie in the Grade 1 Acorn in June, but finished fourth last month in the Grade 1 Alabama, more than 12 lengths behind second-place Good Cheer.
Indy Bay and Clicquot are both 8-1 and have won Grade 2 and Grade 3 races, respectfully, in their most recent starts. Dry Powder (10-1), Ourdaydreamgirl (20-1) and Not Too Late (30-1) round out the eight-horse field.
The racing starts at Parx at 11:05 a.m. Saturday. The first eight races, a mix of maiden special weights, allowance optional claimings and starter optional claimings, each have $100,000 purses.
In addition to the Pennsylvania Derby and the Cotillion, there are two graded stakes on the card. The Grade 3 Greenwood Cup Stakes, a 1 1/2-mile race for three-year-olds and up, is the first of seven consecutive stakes races and has a $200,000 purse. The Grade 2 Gallant Bob Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for three-year-olds, is for $400,000.
NBC Sports Philadelphia will have live coverage from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. that will include the Gallant Bob (4:35 p.m. post time), Cotillion (5:15 p.m.), Pennsylvania Derby (6 p.m.) and Parx Sprint Stakes (6:30 p.m.).
