After watching Penn State struggle to gain yards for three quarters against Oregon, coach James Franklin described the offense Monday as inconsistent.
“We’ve been inconsistent in the passing game,” he said. “We’ve been inconsistent in the running game. This past week was not the ideal situation for an O-line or a quarterback when you continue to get into third-and-long situations.
“The inconsistency is across the board.”
Through four games, the Nittany Lions rank 66th nationally in total offense, 53rd in rushing, 79th in passing and 18th in scoring.
In the 30-24 loss to Oregon in two overtimes, Penn State had 109 total yards through three quarters before driving twice for touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
The Lions are averaging just 397 yards per game, one spot behind San Jose State and one spot ahead of West Virginia.
The offense was expected to be much better with a lot of returning players: five offensive linemen who started at least six games last season, quarterback Drew Allar, running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen and tight end Khalil Dinkins.
Penn State struggled to finish drives in three non-conference games against Nevada, Florida International and Villanova.
“We’ve been inconsistent in how we’ve been trying to run the offense,” Franklin said. “What are the things we need to do to be successful? What are we doing well? How can we build on those things? What are we not doing well? How can we fix those things or pivot in another direction?
“Just because this is how we did it last year doesn’t mean that’s how we have to do it this year. That’s part of leadership and part of decisions that have to be made.”
Allar has completed 62.8% of his passes for 763 yards and six touchdowns with two interceptions and ranks 78th in the nation in pass efficiency.
He had two touchdown passes to Devonte Ross in the fourth quarter to force overtime against Oregon. But in the second extra period, he threw an interception that ended it.
“That last throw is a challenging route people have had difficulty covering, but that was covered,” Franklin said. “We should have moved on or thrown the ball away to give us a chance to play another down and have a chance to win the game.
“I’ve seen Drew’s growth in practice, but obviously all these things need to translate to the game.”
Travel plans: Penn State will practice Thursday morning before leaving for Los Angeles, where the Nittany Lions will face UCLA Saturday at the Rose Bowl.
They will travel by bus to Harrisburg International Airport, where they will board a jet Thursday afternoon to Southern California.
“We spent a lot of time last year on how to travel (to the West Coast),” Franklin said. “I thought we handled it well last year (a 33-30 overtime win over USC). We learned some things from last year.”
Northwestern time set: Penn State’s Homecoming game Oct. 11 against Northwestern has been scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff and a FS1 telecast, it was announced Monday.
It’s the first meeting between the Nittany Lions and the Wildcats at Beaver Stadium since 2022.
