Pedalling for a cause: Cyclists support Murcia’s local charities

Cycling for a Good Cause The race began and ended at the Port of Cartagena, where an energetic crowd gathered to cheer on the participants. Before setting off, riders collected their participation packs, which included a cycling jersey, water, and a few local treats to keep them going. All registration fees went directly to two local charities, Aspajunide, which supports children with disabilities, and EMACC, which helps people living with multiple sclerosis. At the finish line, volunteers had prepared a charity bar and food stand, where participants and spectators could refuel with snacks and drinks. The day ended with a giant paella enjoyed by everyone, a fitting way to celebrate the success of the event and the sense of unity it inspired. Fun for all ages The Guardia Civil also set up an activity area near the port with displays of their vehicles and equipment, attracting families and visitors. Children joined in on a fun road safety course, learning about traffic signs and safe cycling habits while having a great time. It was a reminder that community events like these not only raise funds but also promote awareness and education. Honouring local talent A highlight of the day was the participation of Elena Cavas, a cyclist from Cartagena who recently claimed her third Spanish time trial title. She was honoured by organisers and greeted with applause in her hometown, inspiring both experienced riders and newcomers to keep pushing towards their goals. A community united The Bike Marathon Ruta 062 was more than just a race, it was a celebration of solidarity and local pride. With every kilometre pedalled, participants helped make a real difference, proving once again that when the community comes together, everyone wins.
