In a world where children are increasingly glued to their screens, the Ministry of Education has managed to successfully roll-out ‘PE Fridays’, an initiative that promotes students’ participation in some form of physical activity, every Friday afternoon. Education Minister, Honourable Sonia Parag was elated to see the massive scale with which this new physical education, sports and recreation programme has gotten underway. Not only were there positive reception and extensive participation among both teachers and students, but they were all very enthused to dabble in the exercises and games planned by their schools.
Having ‘PE Fridays’ is a direct response to a call from His Excellency, President Irfaan Ali, to dedicate time to physical education – not just in theory, but in practice as well, and across every public school. The program aims to foster healthier lifestyles and instill values of teamwork, discipline, and resilience.
By promoting active living from an early age, the Ministry is tackling sedentary habits and any potential screen addiction to ensure that Guyana’s children are prepared to thrive both physically and socially.
“Academics, without a doubt are important. Its paramount, but so is being a well-rounded individual,” said Minister Parag.
She explained that the ultimate goal is to nurture a generation of holistic Guyanese who are healthy, confident, and conscious of the importance of active living.
Minister Parag is of the belief that the programme would also nurture more exciting hobbies among children; hobbies that go beyond playing video games and scrolling social media.
“You may never know what you possess until you are able to do something different, and that develops from an environment like this,” Minister Parag said.
She explained that to ensure the successful implementation of the programme, the Ministry of Education has partnered with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
Responding to concerns aired on social media, Minister Parag clarified that the role of the GDF is not intended, in anyway, to take away from the functions of physical education teachers or impose military trainings of any kind.
She explained that the GDF is on board merely to provide support.
“The Defence Force supports with structure, but the physical education teachers and coaches determine the activities,” the Minister told reporters today.
Minister Parag is of the strong belief that the children’s participation in fun games and other activities with their teachers and classmates would also build on existing camaraderie, build stronger friendships, and advance President Ali’s vision of a One Guyana.
“It’s supposed to be fun, but at the same time it develops students holistically,” Minister Parag added.
Colonel General Staff Kenlloyd Roberts of the GDF said also clarified the force’s role as a support system for teachers.
“Our role is limited to providing physical training instructors where necessary, to guide teachers on how to conduct safe and engaging activities,” Roberts said.
While schools along the coast were brushing up on their football, cricket and dance moves, those in the rural schools such as Sand Creek Secondary in Region Nine were hosting archery competitions.
Minister Parag said that while Government will continue to leave no stone unturned in churning out examination toppers, it has also made a commitment to promote recreational activities and efficient skills training.
This mission, according to the Education Minister, will continue to be reflected in every National Budget over the next five years.
In the meantime, Minister Parag is confident that ‘PE Fridays’ will influence healthier habits and improve the lifestyles and interests of children all across the country.
