Part of a wall collapses at Palma Airport

There has been another incident related to construction work at Palma Airport. On Friday, part of a wall collapsed, falling several metres onto a prefabricated module. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

According to the AENA airports authority, the wall came loose due to a blow sustained during work by a subcontracted company. The incident occurred in a restricted area not accessible to travellers. The prefabricated module was visibly damaged. Airport management reacted quickly, halting work in the affected area to analyse the incident and open disciplinary proceedings against the company responsible.

In June, debris shattered a glass roof in the airport’s arrivals area close to baggage reclaim. This was in a space where there are vending machines. Again, and fortunately, there were no injuries. The subcontracted company was penalised in accordance with the terms stipulated in the contract.

Unions have been complaining for months about safety related to the work at the airport and maintain there have been a number of incidents.

The CAEB Confederation of Balearic Business Associations has attacked Palma Airport’s “deplorable image”, the consequence of the work, and the Partido Popular opposition in Spain’s Congress have referred to a “scandalous disgrace”.
