Parliament’s Communications Committee to summon MultiChoice, Sam George over DSTV prices

The Parliamentary committee on Communications and Information has announced plans to invite the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, and MultiChoice Ghana to appear before it over the ongoing dispute surrounding DStv pricing.

The decision follows a clarification issued by MultiChoice Ghana, in which the company expressed support for the government’s recently announced DStv value upgrade, while attributing a contradictory FAQ on its website to an error.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, October 1, Chairman of the Committee and MP for Bunkpurugu, Dr. Abednego Bandim, said Parliament must intervene to address the matter.

“We’re very much informed about the back and forth between DStv and the Ministry of Communications, about their operations, particularly, their pricing.

“What we as a committee can do is to hear from the two entities,” he said.

Dr. Bandim added that the committee had engaged the ministry on September 30, during which the minister briefed members on an agreement with MultiChoice.

He expressed surprise at the company’s subsequent statement, which appeared to contradict the minister’s position.

“On September 30, we were at the ministry, and the minister took time to brief us on their agreement with DStv and highlighted some of the things that we discussed and agreed upon. I’m surprised to hear that DStv has issued a statement disagreeing with what the minister said.

“I have not seen the full details of the statement, and I have not heard the ministry’s reaction to what DStv has said. I think that it is time for the committee to step in now to invite the two bodies and hear from them. And put a clear position, it appears the issue is not dying off,” he stressed.
