By Valentia Tetteh As the world marked World Breast Cancer Day on Friday, October 31, 2025, Members of Parliament joined in commemorating the occasion by sharing their views on how Ghana can strengthen efforts to reduce the growing incidence of breast cancer across the country. During proceedings in Parliament, the Speaker, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, urged Members to show solidarity with persons affected by breast cancer and contribute to the fight against the disease. He called on all MPs to donate GH₵1,000 each, pledging to top up the contributions to reach a total of GH₵300,000. The Speaker explained that the gesture aims to support the activities of the Breast Cancer Association of Ghana in raising awareness, promoting early detection, and providing assistance to patients battling the disease. Mr Bagbin emphasized the importance of regular screening and education, noting that early detection remains the most effective way to save lives. He also called for a national commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and public sensitization to combat the rising trend of breast cancer cases in Ghana. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women globally, accounting for about one in eight cancer diagnoses. In Ghana, the disease continues to claim hundreds of lives annually, largely due to late diagnosis and limited access to specialized treatment. Public health experts continue to advocate for increased awareness, regular screenings, and lifestyle changes, stressing that early detection and prompt treatment can significantly improve survival rates.
