CBS News reports how mass layoffs at companies such as Amazon, UPS and Target might possibly signal a weakening labor market in the United States. A separate report has shed light on this at a state level. And, according to its data, Pennsylvania is one of the worst states for jobs at the moment. Conducted and published by WalletHub, this report ranked Pennsylvania as the seventh worst state to find a job in. The Keystone State’s ranking — along with the rest of the 49 states included on the report — was determined after WalletHub researchers assessed each across two main categories: “Job Market” and “Economic Environment.” Various sub-metrics such as “Employment Growth,” “Industry Variety,” “Share of Workers Living in Poverty” and “Earned Income-Tax Credit” were also taken into account. That being said, the absolute worst state to find a job in was found to be West Virginia. The best was Massachusetts. “Massachusetts is the best state for jobs, in part because it has one of the highest worker protection scores,” the report elaborates. “This includes, among many others, protections for pregnant or breastfeeding women, mandates for equal pay, pay secrecy, or no salary history, as well as protections around flexible scheduling. “Also, the number of available jobs in Massachusetts increases by around 2.4 percent per year, the fourth-highest in the nation, so there will be even more opportunities in the future.” “Living in one of the best states for jobs can provide stable conditions for the long-term, helping you ride out the fluctuations that the economy will experience in the future,” said WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo. “The best states for jobs make it easier for residents to find and retain jobs, and employers in these states also offer very competitive compensation and benefits. “In addition, the top states are great places for people looking to raise a family, ranking among the best states for working parents.”
