Overnight Amazon Web Services outage takes down Snapchat, Fortnite, more

An Amazon Web Services outage overnight Monday took down several websites and services, the cloud computing service confirmed. The issue was first reported around 3:11 a.m. Eastern Time, when the service said it was “investigating increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS services in the US-EAST-1 Region.” In all, 79 services out of the service’s center in Northern Virginia were impacted. Several governments, universities and companies rely on AWS for remote computing services, according to The Associated Press. “We can confirm increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS Services,” the service’s health dashboard read just before 4 a.m. Eastern Time. Numerous websites and services were impacted by the issue, including the social media app Snapchat, games like Roblox and Fortnite, and Amazon.com, according to DownDetector. By around 5:30 a.m. Eastern Time, AWS said it was seeing “significant signs of recovery.” And by around 6 a.m., the service said it “can confirm global services and features that rely on US-EAST-1 have also recovered.” “So much of the world now relies on these three or four big (cloud) compute companies who provide the underlying infrastructure that when there’s an issue like this, it can be really impactful across a broad range, a broad spectrum” of online services, Patrick Burgess, a cybersecurity expert at U.K.-based BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, told The Associated Press.
