Over 8,000 students from 14 districts are expected to converge in Palakkad for four days as part of the State school science festival beginning on Friday. Competitions will be held in six categories: science, social science, mathematics, IT, work experience and vocational higher secondary expo. Registration will start at Government Moyan Model Girls Higher Secondary School at 10 a.m. on Friday. General Education Minister V. Sivankutty will inaugurate the mela at 4.30 p.m. at the same venue. Excise Minister M.B. Rajesh will preside over the function. Elaborate arrangements have been made for the festival. Vegetarian food will be served at Government Victoria College. A dining hall with a capacity for 1,000 people has been set up there. Besides, food will be served at the six schools where the competitions are taking place. Accommodation for boys will be arranged at Model HS, Pezhumkara, Kannadi HSS, and Palghat Lions School at Koppam. For girls, accommodation will be arranged at Kanikkamatha HSS, St. Thomas Convent HSS, Olavakode, and St. Sebastian EM School. Trophies for the winners will be given away at Moyan School. As many as 700 individual trophies and 100 aggregate trophies will be given away. Officials said 2,250 volunteers will be on duty. Social science competitions will be held on the spot. History seminar is a new addition for HS and HSS categories.
