Over 7,000 Student-Athletes set for 2025 NUGA at UNIJOS

The 2025 NUGA Games are scheduled for November 6 to 16, 2025.

The countdown has officially begun for the 27th Nigerian University Games (NUGA), which will be hosted by the University of Jos (UNIJOS) from November 6 to 16, 2025.

With just one month to go, preparations are in full swing as UNIJOS readies itself to welcome 7,457 accredited athletes and officials from universities across the country for ten days of competition, camaraderie, and celebration of university sports excellence.

The NUGA Games, regarded as Nigeria’s premier university sporting event, will feature top student-athletes competing across multiple disciplines designed to foster unity, nurture talent, and promote national development through sport.

UNIJOS assures readiness

Speaking on the institution’s preparedness, Professor Ishaya Tanko, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to delivering a world-class tournament.

“The University of Jos is fully ready to host the nation. This event is not just about competition; it is an opportunity to promote sports excellence, strengthen unity among our young people, and showcase the hospitality and capacity of our institution and the Plateau community,” Professor Tanko declared.

This year’s edition marks the first time UNIJOS will host the NUGA Games, and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has assured that facilities, logistics, and security measures are being finalised to meet international standards.

Preliminary competitions across the 15 NUGA zones have been concluded or are nearing completion, with participating universities finalising qualification for the main event in Jos.

NUGA officials have also confirmed that volunteer recruitment, media accreditation, and event promotions are ongoing through official channels to ensure smooth coordination ahead of the Games.

The university community and the host city of Jos are gearing up to welcome thousands of visitors, creating opportunities for tourism, cultural exchange, and local enterprise throughout the duration of the Games.

As excitement builds nationwide, all eyes will be on the Plateau capital when university sports take centre stage in November, promising to be one of the most memorable NUGA editions yet.
