Over 700 Flights Canceled Due to Government Shutdown

U.S. airlines have canceled hundreds of flights and there will continue to be delays due to the ongoing government shutdown. Flight Cancelations This week, the Federal Aviation Administration ordered 40 major airports to reduce daily flights, lifting some pressure from air traffic controllers going unpaid during the shutdown. Orlando International Airport (MCO), the biggest Orlando airport which most tourists travel through, is among the 40. According to Cirium data, over 700 flights had been canceled by 9 a.m. ET on Friday, November 7. That’s about 3% of the day’s schedule. (via CNBC) The FAA’s order demands a decrease of 4% total on Friday, followed by 6% on Tuesday, 8% on Thursday, and a total of 10% on November 14. Live data from FlightAware.com indicates Orlando had 29 flights canceled on Friday (as of 10 a.m.), about 2% of the schedule. 3% of flights were delayed. It hasn’t been hit as hard as other airports but that doesn’t account for flights into Orlando that may have been affected. United and American both said they are aiming to keep long-haul international flights as scheduled. United added that they are avoiding canceling hub-to-hub flights. They are offering refunds and rebookings without penalty, as is Delta. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said on CNBC’s Squawk Box, “What we’ve done today is we tried to minimize the impact on all of our customers — there’s only 220 flights out of 6,200, flights, and we’ve done it in a way that really impacts our smaller aircraft. This level of cancellation is going to grow over time, and that’s something that is going to be problematic.” Here is the full list of airports reducing flights: ANC – Anchorage International ATL – Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International BOS – Boston Logan International BWI – Baltimore/Washington International CLT – Charlotte Douglas International CVG – Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International DAL – Dallas Love DCA – Ronald Reagan Washington National DEN – Denver International DFW – Dallas/Fort Worth International DTW – Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County EWR – Newark Liberty International FLL – Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International HNL – Honolulu International HOU – Houston Hobby IAD – Washington Dulles International IAH – George Bush Houston Intercontinental IND – Indianapolis International JFK – New York John F.
