Agartala: In a shocking revelation, it has come to light that more than 61 percent of the maiden MBBS batch students at the newly established Shantiniketan Medical College in Tripura have failed their first-year MBBS examination.The college was launched after taking over the government-run IGM Hospital on a free lease. The fees for the MBBS course at Shantiniketan Medical College, which is run by a West Bengal-based private education group with multiple government facilities, are nearly Rs 1 crore. However, despite such high cost of medical education in the medical college, the disappointing outcome regarding the pass percentage of MBBS students has raised concerns.Also Read: Tripura in Talks with NMC to add 100 MBBS seats at Agartala Medical College, launch Super Speciality coursesAs per the latest media report by Tripurainfo, official data revealed that out of 150 students enrolled at Shantiniketan Medical College, 147 students appeared in the examination, and a total of 90 students failed the test. More than 50 students failed in all subjects, while most of the other students failed in two subjects.The situation is no better at Tripura Medical College, where out of 100 enrolled students, 92 appeared in the exams and only 47 students cleared the examination. Therefore, 53 students have to appear in the supplementary examinations.However, Tripura's premier government-run medical college, Agartala Government Medical College recorded the best performance as out of 146 students, 121 students cleared the first-year examination and only 25 students failed, that too in a single subject.Taking the performance of all the students in all three medical colleges, 387 students appeared in the first-year MBBS examination out of 400 eligible students, and only 228 passed. Therefore, a total of 159 students have to reappear in supplementary exams.Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the National Medical Commission (NMC) had approved 150 MBBS seats at Tripura's Santiniketan Medical College last year.
