Kaieteur News – Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) Vice-Chairman, Zamal Hussain is set to vacate his seat for a more prestigious role in the National Assembly as a legislator for the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) when the 13th Parliament is convened.
On Saturday, President Irfaan Ali announced that Hussain will be among the new crop of parliamentarians to serve alongside members of his new cabinet.
Speaking to Kaieteur News Tuesday, Hussain expresses his elation at being handed such a crucial role, one considerably weightier than his current senior position.
“Serving as an MP in the country, and to a lesser extent, Region Six has always been my focus in terms of assisting residents of Region Six and across the country. Serving the people of Guyana is a passion for me,” he stated.
Once a councillor at the RDC, Hussain joined chairman, David Armogan back in 2020 as its vice-chairman. He gave a passing grade to the advancements, which he was able to facilitate both personally and professionally.
“In Region Six, for the past several years as the vice-chairman…a lot of persons reached out to me. Personally, with the help of the government, I have assisted numerous amounts of persons in different types of problems, be it drains, be it personal empowerment, be it economic empowerment, be it issues pertaining to assistance and several other things. If you’re a politician, you can use those opportunities to help people.”
Hussain affirmed his intention to use his national platform to push for holistic and sustained development for his region, as the range of his political reach will be extended once he is sworn-in as a member of parliament. At age 54, the well-known Berbician conveyed his eagerness to assume yet another role in his public life, as long as he can create positive changes to the lives of his fellow citizens. The businessman and politician, who is also a religious leader, has been a member of the PPP/C, taking up ordinary assignments for the party during the 1992 elections. His political starting point in 2006, saw him serving the RDC as a councillor, having been approached by then regional chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha to formally sit on the council. He served on several critical committees of the region, including those of infrastructure, education and health. In 2020, Hussain was the golden pick of vice president, Bharrat Jagdeo for vice chair for East Berbice – Corentyne, which the party won at that year’s elections. Elevating from the regional to the national level, he noted, is a responsibility he deems humbling.
“Joining the team in parliament now, I am very, very elated. It is a privilege to serve the people,” he told Kaieteur News, using the moment to also heap gratitude on the leadership of the party, particularly President Ali, vice president and party general secretary Bharrat Jagdeo, and Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha for their assistance to his political journey and reposing great faith in his capabilities.
“As a representative coming from Berbice, I personally will ensure that Berbice has their fair share,” the incoming lawmaker pledged.
