ATLANTIC CITY — A proposed outdoor gym and bar next to the Showboat Resort Atlantic City will not be happening, according to developer Bart Blatstein’s company, which says it has “exciting” plans for the site for next summer.
Brandon Dixon, president of Tower Investments, said Thursday the gym project, which was largely built and awaiting permission from a state agency to open, is being re-thought.
“Things just didn’t work out for this particular summer with permitting and some issues we didn’t expect,” he said. “We have exciting things happening there next year.”
“The concept has changed,” Dixon said. “I can’t divulge the details, but it will incorporate some fitness aspects.”
Applicant Tony Chowdhury had hoped to have his Fusion Gym up and running in July.
Anthony Faranca is stepping down as general manager of the Showboat Resort Atlantic City.
Extensive work has already been done at the site, including the installation of basketball and pickleball courts, two storage containers that will house bars, and the installation of palm trees throughout the property.
Chowdhury did not respond to messages seeking comment Thursday.
It is located on a sandy lot next to the Showboat and its waterpark that once housed beach volleyball courts.
The outdoor gym was to feature weights and exercise equipment in 28,000 square feet, with a beer garden and patio with outdoor seating.
Fusion has six similar projects in the Philadelphia-South Jersey region ranging from 50,000 to 190,000 square feet.
The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority needed to approve the project in its role as land use regulator in Atlantic City’s Tourism District.
