US President Donald Trump has imposed a 100 per cent tariff on movies made outside of the United States. In a statement posted on Truth Social on Monday, Trump declared that the US will implement a 100 per cent tariff on all films produced outside the country. “Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing “candy from a baby.” California, with its weak and incompetent Governor, has been particularly hard hit. Therefore, in order to solve this long time, never ending problem, I will be imposing a 100 per cent Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” he wrote in his post. Although President Trump’s recent tariff announcement mainly targets Hollywood, the ripple effects could extend to Indian cinema as well. Since the tariff applies to all foreign films, India’s prolific film industry might face significant challenges entering the US market. Trump ended his statement with his iconic catchphrase: “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” underscoring his broader push to prioritise American industries and reduce reliance on foreign production. However, the timeline to impose the tariff is yet to be announced by the American President. Trump’s announcement of imposing a 100 per cent tariff on movies made outside the US echoes a similar statement he made back in May. At that time, he described foreign film productions as a “national security threat” to the American movie industry, arguing that they lure filmmakers abroad and introduce “messaging and propaganda” into the country. 100% Pharma Tariff Meanwhile, on Friday, Trump announced that starting October 1, 2025, a 100 per cent tariff will be imposed on all branded and patented pharmaceutical products imported into the United States, unless the companies involved are actively building pharmaceutical manufacturing plants within the country. Trump shared this on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating, “Starting October 1st, 2025, we will be imposing a 100 per cent Tariff on any branded or patented Pharmaceutical Product, unless a Company IS BUILDING their Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plant in America.”
