The Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation, in partnership with Harambee International Corporation and with support from Possession Resource Finance Institute, has commissioned two mechanized boreholes for Akrofoso Presby School in the Sekyere Kumawu District and Effiduase D/A School in the Sekyere East District of the Ashanti Region.
The boreholes aim to solve water challenges in both schools, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 6, which promotes access to clean water and sanitation.
Representative of the Board Chair for the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II foundation, Nana Asare Bawuah II encouraged school authorities and community leaders to take care of the new facilities.
“I called on them to ensure the longevity of the project because other areas also need same. We used money to construct it so if you need more then you need to sustain what you have now,” he stated.
Rev. Dr. Tyree Anderson, Board Chair of Harambee International Development Corporation, explained the importance of the project.
“We have been already doing it. This is our third borehole. And next on our agenda is to look at doing bathrooms because we will have toilets and running water. If we want to have a successful and a sustainable community, we have to get access to clean water and washrooms,” he emphasised.
At Akrofoso Presby School, the Junior High School headmaster, Agyekum Daniel, spoke about the difficulties students faced.
“The water situation in my school is very bad. First we used to travel a long distance to get water for hand washing,” he stated.
He expressed appreciation to the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation for the support.
“Now that this project has reached us, I think it is a blessing because they say water is life,” Mr. Daniel added.
At Effiduase D/A School, the Junior High School headmaster, Rev. Owusu Afriyei Richard, also shared the challenges his students faced in accessing water.
“In fact we have gone through many challenges that we were having concerning the water situation in the school. It was very very bad,” he stated.
“We have five clusters of schools on this compound and we were not having any sources of water that we were using. Pupils have to move to various houses that were nearby for them to get water and it was challenging to the school. Even some of them have to cross the road and sometimes get knocked down by heavy duty cars,” he added.
He thanked the Otumfuo Foundation, Harambee International, and PRF for the new borehole.
“The coming of this water has given us great relief. In fact the stress we used to go through, we will no longer go through again. We are indeed grateful to the Otumfuo Osei Tutu foundation for bringing this project to this school.
As many as 1,255 students were not having any sources of drinking water and now when they visit the washroom they will get water to wash their hands,” Rev. Owusu Afriyei Richard added.
