In the end it was Red Bull’s Max Verstappen who claimed pole position ahead of a bizarre starting grid that sees Williams’ Carlos Sainz in second and Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson third.

The bizarre starting

Aussie Oscar Piastri was responsible for the final red flag of the qualifying session after crashing into the wall and ended his Q3 without a time on the board.

While he will start the race from ninth on the grid, the good news for the championship leader is his nearest rival, Lando Norris, wasn’t able to capatilise on his mistake.

Norris could only manage the seventh fastest time around the famous Baku City Circuit.

The race will get underway from 9pm (AEST). Don’t miss a second of the action right here.
