Oscar Piastri and McLaren at point of no return

The Aussie was left irate at the weekend, asking his McLaren team if they were “cool with Lando just barging me out of the way”, in a move that would see his title lead whittle away.

Chief executive Zak Brown insisted McLaren was simply “letting them race”.

However, given the fact that the team has seemingly favoured Norris in several instances this year, including when they asked Piastri to give back a place when Norris had a slow pit stop in Italy last month, the team’s ‘papaya rules’ have again come under fire.

And according to Brundle, the relationship between Piastri and Norris “will irrevocably change” moving forward.

“I have no doubt whatsoever that the dynamics between the two McLaren drivers will irrevocably change going forward,” Brundle wrote on Sky Sports.

“It was just a matter of time. Perhaps McLaren should now just let their two drivers duke it out, gloves off, between themselves with zero interference.

“Any nuclear fallout will be tempered by the need to finish races, score points, avoid FIA in-race penalties, avoid Verstappen catching the pair of them, and running out of the latest specification of parts as the team focuses on 2026.”

Behind Piastri’s frustration with both his team and Norris is the fact that the only rule that existed between the McLaren teammates, no contact, was broken and went unpunished.

After the race, Piastri disconnected the team radio after McLaren claimed the contrustors’ championship.

He was then isolated from his McLaren team despite their championship victory.

And it has led to former F1 driver David Coulthard stating that McLaren has got Piastri off-side given the way team officials have meddled in the title race this season.

“You know what? He puts forward a compelling argument! No further words needed,” he said on Channel 4.

“This is what I highlighted earlier in the year. You can only start meddling to a certain degree, because at what point does it become unfair?

“Now, I don’t want to open old wounds, but when I moved over for Mika Hakkinen a couple of times, the return I got was he moves over from third, and when I was running in fourth, and I got a third place, I never got a win back.

“The sensitivity of a race driver is such that fair has to be fair.”

Bombshell report claims Oscar Piastri seeking McLaren exit

Meanwhile, a bombshell report has emerged claiming Piastri is “setting his sights” on a move to Ferrari at the end of the 2026 season.

There have been suggestions Piastri has been treated unfairly by his team during several controversial moments this season, but there has never been any indication the Aussie would want to leave the constructors’ championship-winning outfit.

Swiss news outlet Blick reports the 24-year-old could potentially end up at Ferrari in 2027, with the rumour mill going into overdrive following last weekend’s race.

Earlier this year, McLaren announced Piastri had signed a “multi-year” contract extension beyond the 2026 season. It has been widely reported that the contract concludes at the end of the 2028 season.

It makes Piastri’s bombshell departure seem even less likely, but the Blick report has still caused a stir with predictions of a mass grid shake-up beginning at the end of the 2026 season.

F1 is set for a huge shake-up in 2026 when new regulations come into place, but there are now suggestions that the driver market is also set to turn crazy next year.

According to Blick, Ferrari superstars Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton are the biggest dominoes that could cause significant changes.

Leclerc is tied with Ferrari until the end of the 2029 season. However, Brundle got tongues wagging in June when he suggested it was “only natural” that Leclerc would consider leaving Ferrari if the proud team fails to pull itself out of its slump when the new regulations come into place next year.

Another key element at Ferrari is that Lewis Hamilton’s contract has a clause in his favour to extend his contract one more year through to the end of 2027.

The moving parts could open the door for Piastri to consider a move to the Prancing Horse outfit.

The speculation about Piastri’s future is one of several eye-catching stories swirling around the Aussie following the drama-charged Singapore Grand Prix.

All eyes will be locked in on the McLaren garage when the Formula 1 grid descends on Austin for the United States Grand Prix on October 20.
