Oregon's Dan Lanning Gives Honest Response to LSU, Penn State Openings

No. 6 Oregon is on a bye this week after defeating Wisconsin 21-7 on Saturday. Head coach Dan Lanning has the Ducks in position to return to the College Football Playoff if they can take care of business in November. More News: Two College Football Programs Reached Out to Marcus Freeman: Report Because of Lanning's success with Oregon, his name has been brought up in the national media for open jobs like LSU and Penn State. During an appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show" on Thursday, Lanning made it clear he has no plans to leave Oregon for another high-profile job in 2026. More News: Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman Gives Brian Kelly Brutal Reality Check “Yeah, I'm not leaving Oregon," Lanning said. "Yeah, as long as I win. That's what I always tell my kids, right? 'If your dad wins, we'll be at Oregon.' So I got to win. That's how it changes.” Lanning has done a lot of winning in his first stint as a head coach. He is 42-7 in his fourth season in Eugene. The Ducks won the Big Ten in 2024. Eisen asked Lanning about what he made of LSU and Penn State making sudden coaching changes, as PSU fired Franklin after making the CFP in 2024. Lanning said he's learning to appreciate what he has with the Ducks. He understands that coaching changes have ramifications for other people besides the head coach. “You know, probably more than anything, it makes me grateful for where I'm at and recognizing how fragile and special it is," Lanning said. "And it motivates you to keep working hard because you realize how temporary things can be if you're not moving in the right direction. But on the same note, I always think a little bit more about everybody else involved in that. "You know, the assistant coach, the graduate assistant, the player, they signed up to play for somebody, and just how quickly your world can change. You know, continuity, stability, I think, is super important, and it's hard to have. And when you have it, I think you got to make sure you recognize it and take advantage of it.” Oregon will next travel to play Iowa on Nov. 8. The Ducks will then finish their season against Minnesota, No. 23 USC and Washington. Despite Lanning telling the world he wants to stay at Oregon, he'll likely continue to draw interest from big-name schools in this coaching cycle. But it doesn't appear like any program has a legitimate chance to steal him away. Per Pete Nakos of On3, even if Lanning wanted to leave, another school would have to pay Oregon $20 million to pry him from the Ducks.
