OpenAI signs $38 billion AWS compute deal

OpenAI and Amazon have signed a $38 billion deal that will give OpenAI access to Amazon Web Service’s (AWS) vast network of servers to provide for advanced generative AI workloads. The deal goes into effect immediately and will allow OpenAI to utilize AWS services and capabilities immediately. OpenAI announced the details of its deal with Amazon in a press release on its website this week. Through this deal, Amazon will provide OpenAI with access to the network of AWS EC2 UltraServers, which make use of the latest GPU technology from NVIDIA to scale OpenAI’s generative AI workloads to tens of millions of CPUs, vastly expanding its compute capacity. Microsoft has kept up through the likes of Azure, and Google has its own cloud server network as well, but AWS has notoriously been used throughout the market, so much so that it’s a pretty upending event when AWS server malfunctions. Despite this, OpenAI’s Sam Altman was thrilled to see the deal sealed and looks forward to the potential AWS can deliver for OpenAI’s research and development: With the massive deal, OpenAI looks set to continue to expand its capabilities with Amazon’s help. As we watch for further updates, stay tuned on the OpenAI topic.
