OpenAI Faces Seven Lawsuits Alleging ChatGPT Drove Users to ‘Suicide’ and ‘Delusions’, Say Reports

New Delhi, November 7: OpenAI is reportedly facing seven lawsuits alleging that its ChatGPT contributed to cases of "suicide" and "harmful delusions" among individuals with no previous mental health conditions. The lawsuits were reportedly submitted by the Social Media Victims Law Centre and Tech Justice Law Project, representing six adults and one teenager. As per a report of The Wall Street Journal, seven separate lawsuits were filed against OpenAI in California state courts on Thursday. The lawsuit alleged that extended interactions with ChatGPT pushed several individuals into "delusional" mental states, in some cases leading to "suicide". The report added that the complaints include serious accusations like "wrongful death, assisted suicide and involuntary manslaughter claims." As per a report of The Hindu, the lawsuits allege that OpenAI intentionally launched GPT-4o ahead of schedule, ignoring internal warnings about the model’s "dangerously sycophantic and psychologically manipulative" nature. The report also mentioned that four of the victims involved in the cases had died by suicide. As per reports, 17-year-old Amaurie Lacey initially used ChatGPT seeking support. However, the filing claims the chatbot’s responses led to addiction and depression, and ultimately provided harmful guidance on suicide methods. The lawsuit reportedly stated, "Amaurie’s death was neither an accident nor a coincidence but rather the foreseeable consequence of OpenAI and Samuel Altman’s intentional decision to curtail safety testing and rush ChatGPT onto the market." Another case involves 48-year-old Alan Brooks from Ontario, Canada. The lawsuit states ChatGPT was a "helpful resource tool" for over two years for Brooks. However, the chatbot’s behaviour reportedly shifted and "manipulating him in ways that triggered delusional experiences." The filing further said Brooks, who had no previous mental health issues, suffered a severe psychological breakdown that led to "financial, reputational, and emotional harm."
