OpenAI CEO gets served subpoena during interview as crowd boo angrily

Open AI’s CEO got served a subpoena while talking at a sold-out event, while the crowd started to boo. Sam Altman’s public conversation with Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr took a strange turn on Monday night. Around two minutes into the packed-out media appearance, a man rushed the stage at San Francisco’s Sydney Goldstein Theater and served Altman a subpoena. A clip doing the rounds on social media shows host Manny Yekutiel overlooking the pair mid-conversation with Altman before looking concerned and darting his view off-stage. A man from the second row had jumped towards the two speakers, holding out a document and announcing he had a subpoena. Yekutiel immediately intercepted the man and handed the paper to a theater security guard, who escorted the intruder away as the audience booed. Altman looked startled but stayed seated during the exchange. The day after, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office confirmed the man was a legitimate investigator. Speaking to local outlet SFGATE, spokesperson Valerie Ibarra said in a statement: “An investigator from the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office lawfully served a subpoena on Mr. Altman because he is a potential witness in a pending criminal case. “Our investigators first made several prior attempts to serve the subpoena at Altman’s company headquarters and via its online portal.” Stop AI – an activist group which has staged several demonstrations outside Open AI’s headquarters – took credit for the incident online. In a post on X, the group wrote: “Our public defender successfully subpoenaed Sam Altman to appear at our trial where we will be tried for non-violently blocking the front door of OpenAI on multiple occasions and blocking the road in front of their office. “All of our non-violent actions against OpenAI were an attempt to slow OpenAI down in their attempted murder of everyone and every living thing on earth.” OpenAI’s chatbot will open its doors to erotica by the end of the year, insisting it will "treat adult users like adults" and is "not the elected moral police of the world". OpenAI plans to permit sexually explicit content on ChatGPT for verified adult users, despite a sharp backlash from campaign groups, which warn of "real mental health harms from synthetic intimacy". Sam Altman, OpenAI chief executive, said in posts on X that, in December, as the company rolls out fuller age-gating and under a principle of "treat adult users like adults," it will allow more types of content - "like erotica for verified adults." Altman said ChatGPT was initially "pretty restrictive" to address mental health concerns, but added the company has since "been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues" and now has "new tools" to relax restrictions for most cases.
