At 21-years-old, OnlyFans star Skylar Mae is an official self-made millionaire, and luxury cars, golden-plated dog bones and multiple houses are just some of the wild things she has spent her jaw-dropping earnings on.
“After 3 months on OnlyFans I hit my million dollar mark,” Skylar said. “I was still working at this time and didn’t even realise how much money I was making until I was at the mall and thought ‘oh wait I can ACTUALLY afford anything I want here!’
“It was unbelievable just opening my bank account and seeing that much money there. I still really can’t believe how much money I make. I got my first job at 13 years old, and while I grew up with a super nice lifestyle, I’ve always learned you need to work for what you want, and always have a good work ethic.”
Skylar brings in more than 10x the average US salary a month, a figure that’s pretty incomprehensible to the average 21-year-old. Instead of buying from the sale rack and cheap vodka, Skylar’s able to splash out on luxury items and cars.
“It feels super empowering knowing that I can buy whatever I want,” she said. “It’s made me super independent and free. I feel like so many other people my age still rely so heavily on their parents – my parents actually rely on me.
“My first expensive purchase was a Mercedes. I went to the dealership and since I had no credits I had to buy it in $80,000 worth of cash. It felt so wild going there with my handbag full of that much money.
“I spend a lot of my money on designer clothes, I pay $1000 a week getting my 3 dogs groomed and I just bought a brand new G wagon. People are going to think I’m crazy for this but it was my dog’s birthday the other week and I bought him a gold plated dog bone. I’m 21 with no kids and no responsibilities, why shouldn’t I impulse buy?”
Skylar also makes sure she doesn’t just spend all her money, and is setting herself up for a future.
“While I do love to spend the money I make, I’ve still made smart decisions with it. I’m invested in 2 houses, I definitely invest in stocks which I’ve had some great luck with, and even my subscribers and I share stock tips!”
Her journey to being a 21-year-old millionaire wasn’t without its financial bumps and bruises. Says Skylar, “When I first started, I didn’t know any better and didn’t save for taxes, which really hurt me during my first year of making good money.” Her advice to new content creators? Prepare from the get-go to be able to pay the tax man. “Any time you withdraw from OnlyFans or any adult site, make sure you’re setting aside 40 to 50% of your income for taxes,” is her tip for anyone looking to make sure they avoid common pitfalls that come with an OnlyFans career.
While the money has been great, the only downside of Skylar’s career choice has been a loss of long-term friendships.
“I lost a lot of friends. I live in Scottsdale, Arizona which is a big city but it truly felt small when people started finding out I was doing OnlyFans. People were actually sending my videos around… I was so embarrassed!!! I wouldn’t talk to anyone. Most of these “friends” would just ghost me. My childhood best friend, who my whole family had taken care of and gone on vacations with, completely cut me off.”
When asked what she would tell young creators looking to start in the content creation industry, Skylar Mae’s number one piece of advice is to try everything else first. “Whether it’s pursuing a passion like nursing, going to college, or even working at Subway; don’t jump in just because you see people on TikTok or Instagram showing off the nice things they get from sex work.”
While Skylar Mae enjoys the benefits of her lucrative career, she’s quick to make sure people don’t think it’s been a walk in the park. “Social media is a 24/7 job with constant pressure to go viral, and it can be tough. There are benefits, like working from home and traveling, but I always want to be honest about the challenges.” Skylar also wants young people considering the industry to try at least one or two other paths first, because once they start sharing intimate images online, there is no making those disappear. Says Skylar, “Agencies might promise your friends and family will never find out, but the reality is, they probably will.”
While being a millionaire has been life-changing, Skylar doesn’t just do her job for the money, she sees her job as helping people – especially those who are lonely and don’t get connection elsewhere.
